International 3588 2+2
The Anteater Legend Collector Building Set
Rebuild one of the most unconventional American tractors of the late 1970s — a machine that combined row-crop versatility, four-wheel traction, center articulation, and one unforgettable long-nose silhouette.
A Different Kind of Four-Wheel Drive
The Tractor That Refused to Look Conventional
At first glance, the 3588 does not look like a normal row-crop tractor. Its hood seems too long, the articulation point sits in an unusual place, and the cab appears pushed far toward the rear.
That unusual appearance was the result of a very deliberate idea. International Harvester wanted the traction of four-wheel drive while keeping the maneuverability and field versatility farmers expected from a row-crop tractor.
The resulting 2+2 design became one of the most recognizable experiments in International Harvester history — and the 3588 became one of its defining models.

INSPIRED BY INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER'S 2+2 REVOLUTION
Two Drive Wheels + Two More Changed the Silhouette
Introduced at the end of the 1970s, the 2+2 family placed four equal-size driven wheels beneath an articulated row-crop tractor layout. Unlike many large articulated tractors, the operator remained seated on the rear half of the machine.

The Anteater Legend
One Look at the Nose and the Nickname Makes Sense
Farmers and tractor enthusiasts quickly found their own names for International's unusual new machine.
The long hood stretching far ahead of the front wheels inspired nicknames including “Anteater” and “Snoopy.”
But the nose was more than a styling oddity. Moving the engine mass forward helped distribute more of the tractor's weight over the front drive wheels, supporting the traction-focused philosophy behind the 2+2 concept.
What once made the tractor look strange is exactly what makes it so collectible today.
Details That Define the 3588
The Long Nose Is Only the Beginning
⬛ Tall Black Front Grille
The broad dark grille anchors the very front of the long red hood and gives the model its unmistakable late-1970s agricultural character.
🪟 Rear-Half Operator Cab
The enclosed cab sits behind the articulation area, recreating one of the unusual design choices that separated the 2+2 from conventional articulated tractors.
🪜 Cab Access Ladder
Steps leading up beside the cab reinforce the scale of the tractor while adding a visible piece of real working-machine character.
🛞 Four Equal-Size Agricultural Tires
Large deep-tread tires at both ends give the model the balanced four-wheel-drive stance at the heart of the original 2+2 concept.
⬜ White Cab Roof & Black Side Stripe
Red bodywork, a light cab roof, and the long black identification stripe recreate the bold International Harvester appearance of the era.

DESIGNED AS A ROW-CROP ARTICULATED TRACTOR
Four-Wheel Pull Without Becoming a Giant Conventional 4WD
International Harvester positioned the 2+2 between conventional row-crop tractors and the much larger four-wheel-drive machines of the period. Center articulation provided steering, while the equal-size driven tires spread traction across both halves of the tractor and helped reduce wheel slip.
Build the Anteater
Watch the Strange Silhouette Start Making Sense
Begin with the chassis and wheel assemblies, then stretch the red body forward until the famous long hood begins to appear.
Build the black front grille, engine section, articulation area, steps, enclosed cab, white roof, and rear structure before completing the tractor with its four deep-tread wheels.
The most satisfying moment comes when the front and rear halves finally meet and the unmistakable 2+2 proportions become visible.

From Strange to Legendary
The Design People Questioned Became the Design They Remember
The 2+2 never blended quietly into tractor history. Its proportions were too unusual for that.
The long nose, unusual articulation layout, four equal tires, and rear-mounted operator position made it instantly recognizable in the field and just as easy to identify decades later.
For collectors, that difference is the attraction. The 3588 represents a period when manufacturers were willing to rethink what a high-horsepower row-crop tractor could look like.
A Silhouette Made for Display
This Is Not a Tractor That Disappears on the Shelf
The long rectangular hood gives the finished model a distinctive footprint even before the red-and-black International styling catches the eye.
Display it in a living room, home office, collector cabinet, farm-themed space, study, or alongside other classic machinery.
Put it beside conventional tractors and the 2+2 design difference becomes even more obvious.

A Gift for Red Tractor People
For Anyone Who Hears “2+2” and Immediately Knows the Tractor
To a casual observer, the 3588 is an unusually long red tractor.
To an International Harvester enthusiast, it represents one of the brand's boldest engineering chapters — a machine remembered by its shape, its articulated layout, and even the nicknames farmers gave it.
That history gives the model stronger emotional value for collectors who grew up seeing, operating, or simply admiring classic red farm equipment.
A strong choice for:
- International Harvester enthusiasts
- 2+2 and Anteater tractor fans
- Vintage agricultural machinery collectors
- Farmers and agricultural families
- Adult brick-building enthusiasts
- Christmas, birthdays, Father’s Day, or retirement gifts
